    • Abstract:
With multiple high frequency word lists available, finding a comprehensive program developed through research, with sequential, controlled materials for teaching the words can be difficult. The SWIFT Reading (Sight Word Instruction Is Fundamental To Reading) intervention was created to serve this purpose. Participants were part of a case study using the intervention for 22 weeks of the 2013-2014 schoolyear. Eleven first grade students who were among the lowest 25th percentile in reading were enrolled in a Title I Reading program. They were introduced to high frequency words through sequential word and phrase cards, scaffolded and repeated practice, tactile reinforcements and periodic assessments. All students added from 72 to 120 high frequency words to their sight vocabularies. Those students, along with 19 other first graders who were below the 25th percentile in reading were followed for two years after completion of the intervention. If was found that beginning readers who do not have early literacy skills near grade level targets by the end of first grade are at risk of not progressing in oral reading fluency through at least third grade.
